How to Prepare for Final Fantasy Resonance — The Pre-Launch Checklist
Verdict first: you need zero homework to enjoy Final Fantasy Resonance — it is a standalone retelling. But if you have four months and want maximum resonance (sorry) on day one, here is what’s actually worth doing, in priority order.
1. Decide your edition early
The Collector’s Edition ($209.99 / €219.99) includes the artbook, soundtrack and an exclusive FF TCG promo card. Final Fantasy collector editions historically sell out before launch — if you want it, pre-order now. Everyone else: the Standard Edition is the complete game. There is no gacha and no announced season pass, so you’re not buying into an ecosystem — just a game.
2. Get the HD-2D feel (one game is enough)
If you’ve never played an HD-2D title, one of these will calibrate your expectations — both are turn-based like Resonance:
- Octopath Traveler II — the best-in-class HD-2D RPG, and the closest analogue
- Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake — the “classic JRPG, modern dress” experience
You don’t need both. You don’t even need to finish one. A few hours teaches your eyes the style.
3. The Brave Exvius question
Resonance retells the first arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius — a story you can no longer play, since FFBE’s servers closed in 2024. That makes Resonance the only way to experience this story now, which is exactly why Square Enix made it.
Should you study FFBE lore before playing? No — and we’d actively advise against deep-diving. The original arc’s twists (and there are big ones) land hardest blind. What’s safe to know: the realm has eight protective Crystals, Grandshelt’s knights guard them, and a dark warrior named Veritas wants them gone. That’s the setup — our world page keeps a spoiler-light primer.
4. Meet the cast (spoiler-free)
- Rain — hot-blooded knight commander of Grandshelt’s airships
- Lasswell — his composed lifelong friend and second
- Fina — a mysterious young woman tied to the Crystals
- Plus confirmed guests: Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light
5. Bookmark, join, and come back on day one
This wiki goes full-database at launch: every character sheet, boss strategy, collectible and quest, plus community builds and discussions on every page. Until then we track every official reveal — and the community hub is where launch-day plans are already taking shape.
See you in Grandshelt on October 22.
