Final Fantasy Resonance Announced — First HD-2D FF, Out October 22, 2026
It finally happened. During the June 9 Nintendo Direct, Square Enix unveiled Final Fantasy Resonance — the first Final Fantasy ever built in HD-2D — and it arrives sooner than anyone expected: October 22, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store).
A celebration of classic and modern Final Fantasy
Square Enix describes Resonance as “a celebration of classic and modern Final Fantasy that evokes the beloved titles of yesteryear.” In practice, that means:
- HD-2D presentation — the pixel-art-meets-diorama style of Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest III remake, applied to Final Fantasy for the first time
- Classic turn-based combat blended with modern systems
- A fully premium, single-player adventure — no gacha, no stamina, no live service
Brave Exvius, reborn
The biggest surprise is the story: Resonance reimagines the first arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile RPG that ran from 2015 until its servers closed in 2024. Knights Rain and Lasswell of the Kingdom of Grandshelt, joined by the mysterious Fina, must stop Veritas of the Dark from destroying the realm’s eight protective Crystals.
For the millions who played FFBE — and lost access to its story when the servers shut down — this is nothing short of a resurrection. And for everyone else, it’s a brand-new standalone Final Fantasy with no homework required.
Guest appearances by Cloud Strife, Tidus and the Warrior of Light were confirmed in the reveal trailer, honoring Brave Exvius’ crossover tradition. The trailer also showed a Coliseum, a Gilgamesh side storyline, summons, chocobos and moogles — and a boss fight against Ultima Arma.
